Department. SALARY.
£460 per annum rising by annual increments of £20 to £500 during the third year and thereafter in the event of the appointment being made permanent by further annual increments of £20 to £600 and then £25 to a maximum of £1,000 a year subject to efficiency bars at £600 and 2700. For purposes of local payment. the salary is converted into dollars at the Government rate of exchange which is fixed at present at two shillinge to the dollar. In addition a strictly temporary exchange allowance is at present paid according to the following scale:-

CONVEYANCE ALLOWANCE.
A conveyance allowance of $240 per annum will be paid to the person engaged while performing his duties in the Colony. QUARTERS.
If quarters
Partially furnished rented quarters, if available. are supplied by Government a deduction of 6% (or 7% if heavy furniture is provided) will be made from the officer's salary. If Government quarters are not supplied, an officer who rents a tenement with the permission of the Government, receives a rent allowance in the sum of the ront and taxes payable in respect of the unfurnished tenement less a sum of 6% salary. The maximum ronthly rentals inclusive of taxes which" are recognised by the Government are as follows.
(a) In the case of an officer whose salary exceeds £1,200 :
$250.
(b) In the case of an officer whose salary exceeds £900 but does not exceed £1,200 : 8200.
(c) In the case of en officer those selary exceeds 2600 but
does not exceed 2900: $150.
(d) In the case of an officer whose salary does not exceed
£600 $120,
A tenement is taken to be a separate house or a self-contained flat of two or more rooms, but does not include accommodation in a hotel or boarding-house 2, except with the express, approval of the Governor, a single room or two rooms occupied by an officer singly.
