The Crown Agents for the Colonies have to request that

Messrs. White & Son will cause the subjoined advertisement to be

inserted once in each of the next issues of the following

papers and forward a cutting from each paper to their office for

record:-

"The Times" "Engineering"

"Telegraph" "Engineer"

"Municipal Journal" "Scotsman"

ASSISTANT ENGINEER required by the Government of Hongkong for the

Public Works Department for three years' service with possible

permanency, Salary £460 rising to £500 a year by annual

increments of £20 and thence (if appointment is made permanent)

to £1000 a year, payable locally in dollars at the Government

rate of exchange which is at present fixed at 2/- to the dollar.

In addition & strictly temporary exchange allowance of 20% of

salary is at present paid, and thus at the present time the

annual salary in dollars will be $5520 a year. The current

rate of exchange being now about 2/4d to the dollar, the sterling

equivalent of #5520 is accordingly about £640. Conveyance

allowance of $240 a year, No income tax is at present imposed

by the Government of Hongkong. Free passages provided.

Candidates unmarried, 24-30 years of age must have had sound

municipal engineering training and have passed the examination

qualifying for an associate membership of the Institution of

Civil Engineers or the Institution of the Municipal and County Engineers or hold equivalent/qualifications. Must have had

experience in surveying levelling. reinforced concrete, modern

road construction and maintenance and civil engineering design.
