the

dredged trench to a level of 47 fest below L.V.0.3, 7.,

quarry spalle and pell-nell rubble above being correspond-

ingly increased in thickness to provide the same level for

the base of the wall and extent of apron as in the previsus

design.

Mr. Duncan's successor, kr. Baker, the present

Port Engineer, states that as considerable doubt exinto

regarding the permanent stability of the foundations of

a quay wall constructed in accordance with the design of

his predecesser, an alternative design has been adopted

which eliminates sand as a material to be deposited in the

foundations and substitutes peli-mell rubble.

It is anticipated that the foundations formed en

these latter lines will be completed along the length

frenting Marine Lata 450 and 431 before sur reply has been

received but, in view of possible economy by the use of

sand in the foundations of future extensions of the quay

wall at this site, Mr. Baker suggests that our advise ba

obtained on the following points:-

(a) Whether sand, equal to the sample as forvarded,

may be used for forming quay wall foundatione in

accordance with Mr. Duncan's first design;

(b) In the event of our being unable to approve the

design referred to in (8), whether sand, or part

sand, may be used in the quay wall foundatione,

and, if so, an outline of our proposals is required.

10.

Mr. Baker requests further that we should be

asked to advise, in connection with his alternative design,

to which the wall is new being constructed and which

eliminates all sand in the foundations:-
