God.

Please see your letter of the 2nd February 3339/25

regarding the information which we were to publish about the

relative value of the Hongkong dollar etc. in connection with

appointments in the Colony. You will see from the copy of

the advertisement which accompanied our letter to you of the

3rd October that it was arranged that we should say that the salary was payable locally in dollars at the Government rate of exchange which is et present fixed at 2/- to the dollar and that in addition a strictly temporary exchange allowance is at present paid etc. etc. etc. We now see from the papers of

particulars sent to us with your letter of the 12th June δεν 4844/25 and the 15th June 19845/25 authorising us to proceed fie.

with the selection of a European Attendant for the Lunatic Asylum and an Engineer for the Roads Office, Public Works Department respectively, that they now say that the salary in the Colony is converted at 12 dollers to the £. etc. etc. This of course is the same thing as paying 10 dollars to the plus 20% but in view of the standard agreement in use, a copy

dollar is converted

of which is enclosed, which says that the

at 2/-, we think that it would be better to adhere to the old arrangement, but what would you prefer us to do in the matter ? If we say that the salary will be paid at 12 dollars to the £

we must presumably alter the standard agreement.
