AN BUCCI
the 9.5.Barvistan signalled that her firemen were deserting
before the ship was moored. An armed party and stokers
were sent on board and remained until the ship was safely
berthed.
(11) At 0730 this morning (July 7) two servants of the Commissioner of Oustoms (natives of Ningpo) were removed from his house. In response to his alarm signals, "Bluebell's" armed party cut off sampan in which they were being taken away and the servants were allowed to return
to their master.
No further action was taken as the Commissioner,
who is als, the senior Chinese official in Swatow, wished
to deal with the matter himself.
(111) At the request of Jardine Matheson Co., a working party was landed on their pier this forenoon (July 7) to remove some heavy gangways from the pier to the pontoon. This work was necessary as a typhoon precaution and the coolies which had been hired to do the job had been driven away by the strikers. Owing to the attitude of the crowd it became necessary to clear the pier and, after this had been done, the working party were stoned by loafers among the crowd. The stoning was quite ineffective and the work ompleted without trouble.
