sir,
With reference to your letter, F.A./V/5,
of the 7th of August, I am directed by Mr. Secretary
Amery to tranmit to you, to be laid before the
Committee of Imperial Defence, the accompanying
extract from a despatch which has been received
from the Governor of Hong Kong on the subject of
the strength of the garrison of Hong Kong.
2. In viewof the large military contribution
paid by the Colony, and of the present financial
situation, the Secretary of State agrees with the
Governor that it is out of the question to suggest
that the cost of additional permanent barracks shoul
be met from Hong Kong funds. With reference to
paragraph 3 of the Governor's despatch, it does not appear to the Secretary of state that any useful
