Hon. Colonial Secretary,

I beg to submit a report on the work done
by this Police Force from the middle of June onwards.
One of the most satisfactory features has been the staunchness of the Chinese Contingents, consider- ing the number of defections there were inother departments. Out of 105 Chinese Clerks, Telephone Operators and Sergeant Interpreters, only one left his work. Out of 533 Cantonese Police, only 7 deserted. An eighth man went on 6.8.25,
but it is not certain that it was due to the Strike. Of
the seven above mentioned, only one was on the Detective
Staff.
of 353 Wei Hai Wei men, only 3 deserted. This is excluding 2 who left in August. They may not have gone on account of the Strike.
of 233 Chinese Water Police ratings, 9
Seamen and 5 Stokers deserted. Not a single Coxswain or Engineer left his post. I consider this is most creditable, as I believe that practically the entire floating staff of the Harbour Department disappeared. A large number of the Water Police are actually members of the Seamen's Union.
I have no information as to whether the latter put any
The pressure on them to try and bring about defections. complete pre-Strike Launch service was maintained.

The European Contingent were on 8 hours duty a day instead of 6 until the middle of August. No leave could be granted for the first 2 months, and all ranke had to be confined to their own Districts. This was also the case with the Indian and Chinese Contingents. No complaints of any kind were made, and all ranks worked most cheerfully.
