Enclosure 1.

Manager,

131

I have to report that I am informed by a painter of Mohamed Ali'a gang working at Bridge No.49, that seven of his fellow workers were taken over to Chinese Territory

this morning by some men they presumed to be strikers, but

who carried rifles.

LI YAU of Shanghai Street, Yaumati, states that:-

"There were eight of us altogether.

"We fixed all our gear and planks yesterday

"and were starting to scrape ready for painting

*this morning.

*About 7.30 a.m. two men carrying rifles, but

not in uniform, came up to the Chinese side of the bridge and

told us to stop work, and come up onto the bridge. They

also called to their friends in the Chinese Customs quarters

to come and assist them. Then I came up first and ran back

to Lowu. One of the men with rifles ran after me and came

over the 100-foot span onto the British bridge, but I managed to get away to Lowu Station.

"I have not seen any of my seven companions since

and was told by some female coolies at the Station that they

were caught and taken away by the Chinese soldiers."

I can find no other eye witness, but the seven

men have not been heard of since.
