I informed you in my telegram of the 15th August of the seizure of two junks at Shataukok, and I now enclose a report by the District Officer
regarding the incident.
A path close to the frontier which runs between villages in British territory has been specially watched by Chinese pickets who are stopping all traffic along it. On the 14th August a picket fired five rounds at a man and woman who were carrying fruit, the bullets striking close to them, and they then came across the border and took away the fruit. On the 20th August a gang of Public Works Department coolies were at work repairing the path, when a Chinese picket appeared and fired at them. The men ran away leaving a bicycle behind, which was stolen by the picket.
On the night of the 18th August a gang of armed soldiers raided the village of A Ma Wat and
stole property valued at $400.
On the 21st August the Police at Lok Ma Chau
station saw a picket of two men fire upon a ferry
which was in British waters, bringing a number of
people across the Shum Chun river into British
territory. A Police patrol went down to the river
and was fired upon as it approached. The two men
comprising the picket had in the meantime compelled
the ferry boat to return and they hid themselves behind the passengers, withthe result that the
Police patrol was unable to return the fire.
There have been one or two cases of kidnapping.
I attach a copy of a report of the experiences of a member of the Water Police who was arrested.
