End Law

(*)

(a) A strong current already exists in this portion of the

harbour, which will naturally be increased after the wall is constructed.

The action of this current will be to scour away the mad overlying the existing seabed outside the line of the granite rubble apron with the result that the sand filling will no longer be confined, and will tend to

Boour away, causing the wall to settle at the toe. (b) The action of the propellers of vessels, arriving at and

departing from the wharf, will alse cause the mad in front of the granite rubble apron to Boour, with the result that the sand will be exposed to the action of the current, and will erode, thus causing undue settlement at the toe of the wall.

The ad through which the foundation trench is being dredged is soft and has no substance in it, and it will therefore be very susceptable to the mallest scouring action.

(e) Owing to the rise and fall of the tide the water will

back up to the same level behind the wall as in front, and this will cause a practically continuous flow of water backwards and forwards through the sand foundat- ion and the rubble above it. This flow will gradually draw out the finer particles of the sand, and the scouring action caused thereby will increase until voids will be formed under the foundation of the wall

causing movement of the whole structure.

Item 21. It is clear from the actual wording of Clauses 24,

25 & 26 of the Contract, and from the description given on the Contract Drawings, that either sand or rubble were contemplated for filling in the dredged tranch under the wall, and as the Contract is for

a lump sum, no extra could be claimed if on were

substituted
