embedded in decomposed granite; in these cases, dredging operations were only carried out to the depths of the

boulders; alse over a length of about 100 feet of trench

which has been dredged to a depth of 80 feet below L.W.0. 9.T.hgrond which depth the dredger is unable to operate. The material in the bottom of this portion of trench is decomposed granite with pockets of Kaolin.

Drawing - D shows a cross section and elevation

of the quay wall designed by Mr. John Duncan, late Port

Engineer, and which the Netherlands Harbour Works Company

have contracted to construct in the position referred to

in paragraph 1. It will be noted that, to form the foundations for the quay wall, sand fill is permitted in

the dredged trenches to a level of 39 feet below L.W.O.S.T.

above which is deposited 2 feet thickness of quarry spalls, the foundations being completed by the deposition of pell

mell rubble to the lines and levels shown on plan.

Prior to Mr.Ihmcan's retirement on the 31st

March, the contractor had been unable to procure sand of

the quality specified in the Contract for filling in the

dredged trench, a finer grained sand, however, was brought

on the works ami its use was approved for filling in a

length of about 170 feet of trench to the level of 47 feet

below L.W.0.8.1. between the points Y and ▼ show on Drawing - B: this work was completed about the end of

March. Above this sand fill about 5 feet thickness of

quarry spells have since been deposited and the foundation

cœpleted by the deposition of pell mell rubble composed

of stones weighing 1 to 5 orta., the foundations seaward

of the quay wall will be protected by 1 ten boulders set

hard to hard.

Since Hr. Duncan's retirement, although the

contractor has brought sand on the works equal to the

quality specified, he has not been permitted to deposit

it
