By direction of Mr. T. L. Shum, the manager
of the local office of the Chinese Telegraph Administration, who is still in Government Civil Hospital, I have the honour to report for your information that about 1 p.m. on the 16th instant, when he had just left the office for tiffin and was entering his motor car at the entrance of the Telegraph Lane, three man, one in European dress and the other two in Chinese, suddenly rushed forvard from the corner of the Building and one of them fired a shot at him with a revolver wounding him at the back. Having been already armed with a revolver, Mr. Shum turned on his assailants and hurriedly returned fire at them as they were making their escape. As
to the motive of this daring attempt made to mrder him,
Mr. Shum is unable to suggest any, but admits that under the direction of the Ministry of Communications, Paking, he has refused to hand over the charge of the administration to a man claiming to have been appointed by the Canton Authority, as Shum was appointed by the Peking Government
who has the direct control of the Chinese Telegraph
Administration here. Mr. Shum also admits that acting under the instructions of the Ministry of Communications, he has insisted on full payment on any telegrams sent by Dr.
Sun in Canton.
While on the subject, I am glad to inform you
that although the bullet which entered Shum's back, has, 30
fer, not yet been extracted out, he seems to be progressing
satisfactorily
