Secretary of State to the Secretary of State for War.
Perhaps Mr. Amery would agree to sign the letter the
draft of which is herewith.
In addition to giving his collection of china
valued at over £250,000, Sir Paul will also give his
wonderful collection of pictures relating to China. This
latter collection is described in the volume herewith
which Sir Pall brought to me and which I accepted on behalf of the Library with cordial thanks (they might
perhaps be supplemented by a note from the Private
Secretary.)

Your telegram of 9th June. Whilst fully sympathi sing with Chater I regret I cannot ask you to press the War Office as to the parade ground. It is the only area near to the Barracks available for Military exercise and Recreation and I agree with
the General Officer Commanding that surrender is
impossible until the Troops leave Murray Barracks
I suggest you should urge the War Office to proceed immediately with reprovisioning British Battalion
at Gun Club Hill which will take the place of
Murray Barracks.
