It was the late American Ambassador to London who

said after the Great War.

"The British Mercantile Marine, has rendered more service, to more men, of more nations, than any other human

agency ever constructed".... ..., and

With an appeal on my lips I ask you to press the Government for the naval protection that is needed, and has been promised, you will then earn the lasting gratitude of the officers who are daily risking their lives, to bring you the food you eat, and enhanced prosperity to this Colony.

Is it too much to ask that the proper Naval protection be given?

Mr. Brown's Statement.

It is with considerable regret that I learn that

the Government are not prepared to allow this Committee to

discuss the whole question of piracy. I had hoped that, in

the light of the discussion which took place at the last

meeting of this Committee, the attitude you then indicated

might since have been reconsidered.

I believe that the other unofficial members of

the Committee entirely agree with me that it is not only

desirable but essential

-

if a satisfactory conclusion to its that every aspect of the question

should be taken into consideration.

work is to be achieved

-

Since our last meeting the views of the Shipping

Committee and of the General Committee of the Chamber of

Commerce have been taken, and it has been unanimously agreed

by both these bodies that discussion confined solely to

alteration
