The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office

LONDON

..i.

18th September 1994.

Sir,

In a letter dated July 23rd, 1923, the Conference

of Miss ionery Societies submitted certain proposals with

regard to the former German missions working in Hongkong.

In a reply dated January 9th, 1924, (954/1924) we were

in formed by the Secretary of State that the Hongkong

Government considered it undesirable that the Rasel Kission

should resume work in the Colony, though they had no

objection to the return of Mr Jucker. It was thought at

that time that the other German missions did not wish to

return to the Colony and it was sugested that the Trusters

shoul dispose of their property and hand over the proceeds

to the societies for work in the Tungtung Trovince of Ching.

A now situation has been created through the deci-

sion of the Secretary of State to remove any discrimination against German missionary societies in regard to missionary work in the colonies, protectorates un? mandated territories

Mr Thomas under the supervision of the Colonial Office. has stated that it will now be open to the Conference of Missionary Societies to recommend German missionary

societies for inclusion in the list of societies "recognised" by His Lajesty's Government under the existing arrangements.
