difficulty might perhaps be met by installing a small portable
set. The range of such a set might vary between 20 and 100
miles according to the atmospheric conditions, but this would
probably be sufficient.
But apart from the question of accommodation and
initial cost, there was the difficulty of personnel. On the
river steamers two operators would be required and on the
gun-boats four would be necessary in order to make a proper
system of reliefs possible.
26. Sir G. Grindle then read an extract from a recent
despatch in which the Governor stated that experiments were
about to be carried out with semi-automatic wireless alarms,
the adoption of which if practicable, would remove the objec-
tion of expense, and Hr. Bramah gave an account of some
experiments with apparatus of this kind which he had recently
attended.
It was however agreed that even though a distress
signal might be sent out semi-automatically by one of the
ships officers, this would not be sufficient, as such a signal
would not be of much use unless the position of the ship were
also given and this would require the presence of a skilled
operator.
2
The difficulty of providing personnel would however
be greatly reduced by the installation of semi-automatic
transmitting and receiving apparatus, as it would be sufficient for one skilled operator only to be carried since it would not be necessary for him to keep continuous watch.
27.
Mr. Leak then stated that experiments with automatio
wireless apparatus had given good results in this country,
but that it was not yet certain whether they would be success-
ful under Tropical conditions. In order to test this, a ship,
