Le 1920-4 a Commission of "Far East" visited Hong Kong and made some criticisms. They spent a fortnight in Singapore and produced criticisms upon reports and recommendations. There were the object of a good deal of criticism from Col. Forts, who complained that the reports were based on insufficient information and inadequate appreciation of local difficulties.
In Hong Kong, there is special difficulty in convincing the Chinese of the adoption of Western treatment. Institutions such as the Tung Wah Hospital, which were then strongly criticised for Chinese methods, are now gradually coming round. In fact, a large number of Chinese who would not consider going to a European hospital are now going to that hospital. Even on the most conservative estimate, there is a gradually increasing proportion of the Chinese community in favour of European methods. The progress is being made in the right way - by education of the population. Provision is now made for a European M.O. to superintend at the Chinese medical institutions.
