It is considered desirable not to hurry events too much

in Malaya but to allow Malaya to profit by the experience

Infantile Mortality + lefant Welfare.

A true infantile mortality rate cannot be

calculated, owing to the habit of not registering

births among the Chinese. The constant flow of

Chinese between Hong Kong and China is also a diffi-

culty. The number of deaths of children under 1 year

of age in 1922 was 4,216, of which 1,082 were under

1 month old.

Straite Settlements.

The infantile mortality rate in 1922 is given

as 195.22 per mille.

Federated Malay Stat és.

The following is an extract from the Medical

Report for 1922.

"There were 5,963 deaths of children under

one year of age, giving an infantile mortality rate of

170.83 per 1,000 births as compared with a rate of 183

for 1921.

Infant Welfare Centres have been establish-

ed at Taiping, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur in connection

with the Town Dispensaries. The two former were start-

ed in the latter part of the year. That in Kuala

Lumpur was opened in April under the charge of a Lady

Medical Officer assisted by a European Nursing Sister

who had previous experience in Infant Welfare work

has proved very successful; the number attending in-

creasing month by month and up to the end of the year

there had been 4,076 attendances of women and children.

This clinic is now well established and it will soon

he necessary to find other accommodation as the Town

Dispensary
