Sir,

WESTMINSTER,

LONDON, SW. 1.

10th September, 1924.

With reference to your letters of the 25th of Gi

Gr June, No 26394/24 and 12th of July, No.32379/1924 authorising us to proceed inter alia with the selection of four Engineers (Architects) for the Architectural Office

of the Hong Kong Public Works Department, I have the honour

to report that these vacancies have been advertised twice

in the Public Press with disappointing results. Of the

candidates who applied it was only possible to select one

and he failed to pass the medical examination.

2. We have been acting in conjunction with Mr.

L.D. Martyn in this matter and a copy of a letter which he

has written to us on the subject has been sent to the

Colonial Office semi-officially.

3. In the past we have found difficulty in procuring

candidates to fill similar vacancies, and it has only been

after repeated advertisement, and considerable delay that

we have succeeded to doing so.

It appears to us, therefore, that the scale of

salary should be improved, and I would suggest that we should

be authorised to offer £500 £20 £600 a year.

Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office,

S.W.1.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient servant,
