From the Governor of Hong Kong to the Secretary

of State for the Colonies.

It is important to me for family reasons to be in England early in the year. Your private and personal telegram of the 1st of December however leaves me in doubt as to the date of expiration of my present term of Governorship. Could I take three or four months leave beginning id April? coming back afterwards even if the remaining period were short?
