In view of the recent
Cabinet decision as to the
Singapore Base, the enclosed
telegram from Hong Kong 16
singularly opportune. I think
you will agree with me that it
would have a very happy effect
if, when the announcement is
made in Parliament I could say that not only are the Straits Settlements maintaining their former generous attitude in
regard to the gift of land
but also Hong Kong has made this /
fine offer. I understand that
the shipping control profits
amounted to over two million dollars (Hong Kong currency), which at present rates is
equivalent to nearly a quarter
of a million sterling.
I am sure you will agree
with me in this, and I hope that in the circumstances the
Admiralty will see its way to
humouring local feelings and
waiving its objections to the
reclamation project to which
