alongside of French dollars called in the balance sheet by the character "Bai". This is the usual character used when referring to the currency of Indo-Chine, the meaning is "Western" but in this connection is really the last character of the Chinese equivalent for French "Fat Lan Sai". In

Chinese accounts where the shareholders are in various countries it is usual to state clearly the currency in which each item is given. The mention of Government opium being put up for sale at an upset price of 86,300 per chest must

refer to the Indian Opium imported by the Government of Indo-Chine. The reference to "Three character" goods may

possibly refer to the brand "Sam Kei" the character San

meening Three, this is a well know brand coming from

Kwongchowwan, and we have often come across samples as wel]

as references to it in opium smigglers' accounts examined

recently.

The payment to Yee Kee is apparently in the nature of a licence fee er royalty, probably this firm has some privilage either in Kwongchowwan or China, most probably they are the opium farmer at Kwongchowwan. It will be noticed that the Sheng On out of a total capital of $25,000 deposits $10,000 in the Yee Kee. In all probability the Sheng On is really the same as the Yee Kei, and has the monopoly of boiling for export, this would be a typically Chinese way of doing business under a multiplicity of names.

The item "Commission to staff" is really I expect payment to boilers for boiling extra wounts of opium. The custom being to pay wages for boiling an agreed amount, anything over being paid for as overtime; this is the custom adopted from the time of the opium farmer here at the Government Opium Factory.

This is the first balance sheet of a Chinese Opium

It shows how large an boiling Factory that I have seen. amount of business may be done on a small capital. This balance sheet does not of course show the total profits.
