COLONEL CARMICHAI

#

We visited the Ordnance Survey

Office at Southampton on the 28th November and dis- cussed with Colonel Jack, Colonel Wolff and Major HoLeod the possibility of obtaining more highly qualified candidates for vacancies in the Hongkung Survey Department.

The Colony complain that recent candidates have not possessed the technical quali- floations necessary. The Colony stipulated in the past that surveyors should possess the following qualifications:

(a) Production of Batisfactory credentials of training

as Land surveyors and of ability as Draughtsmen. (b) Possession of a sufficient knowledge of Astronomy

to enable them to lay down a true medidian line

and ascertain the latitude,

Candidates have been obtained from the civilian staff

of the Ordnance Survey Office and when they have not possessed astronomical knowledge arrangements have been made for them to take a short course on this

subject.

The Colony in their letter of 3rd July and enclosures, state that candidates should be able to carry out

triangulation work and possess sufficient knowledge of the theodolite to permit them to run a closed

traverse. The above necessitates a knowledge of plain trigonometry. The work of the Ordnance Survey

Office is sectionalised and men who are employed on

the ordinary Revision work, which is carried out by

chain surveying, are not engaged on work of a more

difficult nature such as triangulation and instrument
