I sent a copy of the Govemor's despatch

semi-officially to Messrs.Coode, Fitzmaurice

Wilson & Mitchell for their observations

and have now had a letter from Sir Maurice

Fitzmaurice, a copy of which I enclose. From

this I think it is evident he is very

anxious that his firm should stand well

with the Colony though he points out that

the fee asked for covered a considerable

amount of work

The suggestion made in the last two

paragraphs of his letter are worth considera

tión. In the penultimate paragraph he says

the firm are prepared to allow £2,860,0,0.

of their fee to be merged in any further

work they maydo in connection with the same

scheme. I am afraid we do not know whether

the Colony intend to carry out the scheme,

but if they do intend to carry it out

whether departmentally or by contract and

appoint Messrs.Coode, Fitzmaurice, Wilson &

Mitchell Consulting Engineers for the scheme
