qualifications are required except a good character and honesty, capacity to work and sufficient intelligence and
education to be able to acquire an adequate knowledge of
the law as it affects the work of the Court.

For this post I would suggest a salary of
£400 rising by annual incrementa of £10 to £500, with free
quarters which will be provided by Government in the
neighbourhood of the Magistracy and supplied with the
necessary articles of heavy furniture.
I think it advisable to add that the
surroundings of the quarters will be Chinese so that it is essential that the person selected for appointment should be young and not too particular as to his comfort and convenience, A married man would, I am sure, find
the position impossible.
5.
The person appointed would if he proved
suitable have a reasonable prospect of promotion to the
post of First Clerk in the Hongkong Magistracy to which a salary of £500 rising by amual increments of £20 to £600
is attached.
6. Mr. G. Nichols of Furzie Close, Barton-on-
Sea, Hampshire, has been mentioned to me as a suitable person for employment of this nature and I should be glad if he might be informed of the vacancy and considered with
other candidates if he so desires.
