Dear Bir Paul Chater,
The Duice of Devonshire desires me to write
to you about some of the points you raised when you saw
him the other day.
(1) Hong Kong University. He has agreed to the
staff being selected on behalf of the University by
the Private Secretary for Appointments and steps are
already being taken to select a Lecturer in English.
We have not yet had particulars of the three December
Tacancies of which you spoke, but as soon as we do wa
will take action,
Vice Chancellor. We have heard from Sir
William Brunyate of his intention to retire next spring.
and the Duke will be glad to help in finding a new Vice-
Chancellor.

Military Lande. The Duke is sorry to hear
that the War Office are not prepared to accept the latest
proposals which have been put forward. He is telegraphing
the counter proposals of the War office to the Governor
