PER SONAL

UNIVERSITY OF HONGKONG.

Sir Gilbert Grindle, K.C.M.G.,C.B.,

etc.

etc.,

eto.. Colonial Office, LONDON.

4th May, 1923.

Dear Sir Gilbert,

Since writing yesterday, we have received an inti-

mation that Paul Chater is omtributing $250,000.00, in response

to our Appeal. The contribution would have been made earlier

had he not wished to avoid the suggestion that it and his

honorary degree were part of a bargain.

There is just time to let you know of this before

Louth

the mail goes out. It is, in my opinion, entirely adequate

regarded as a response to our Appeal, but it leaves untouched

the question of whether a really munificent end owment of this

University might not be the beat memorial to Sir Paul in the

future. In speaking to him over the telephone this morning

he expressed the hope that he might see some of you at home

and referred to the fact that there will be other charitable

contributions on his return. I believe that were it tactfully

intimated to him that H.M.G., would really appreciate such an

thing

tatt endowment, the Hand would be a possibility.

Sincerely yours,

V. Sanzeliū
