sir,

With referenés to your despatch No. 302 of the 22nd May isst, enclosing a copy of a despatch from His Majesty's Consul at Kiungo how in which he requeste instructionu ne to the national status of (1) wives and widows, and (2) the children born in China, of British subjects of Chinese rass, I have te infom you that the saswer to the first of the questions asked by Ir. Bristow should be to the effect that the Wives and widows of such British subjects are naturally British subjecte and should be registered as such at His Majesty'a Consulates in China.

2. It follows that the children of British subjects of Chinees

rese should only be registered in China as British subjecte when they fulfil the sonditions laid down in the standing instructions, 1.0., speaking generally, they are not registered unless they are born in the British Empire.

3. While I attach importance to no alteration being made in the present practies of His Majesty's Consular Officers in China with regard to the registration of British subjects as long as political conditions in that country continue to be chaetio,

I ought at the same time to make it clear that, while the present practice se to registration should continue, it is legally impossible to deprive anyone of his British nationality by the omission of any formality in China.

I an, with great truth and regard,

sir,

Your obedient Servant,

(For the Beeretary of State)
