Towards the end of Jamiary Liu Yu-chiu had trouble

with one of his subordinate generals, whom he cashiered.

The latter revolted and was immediately supported by Tong

Hai-hou, who was apparently nervous leat Diu Yu-chiu intended

to deal individually with and displace the various generals

to his own advantage. Hostilities opened, and Teng Hai-hou

advanced from Chungking to Chengtu. Tan Mou-Hein immediately

took the opportunity to advance from Van Heien on Chungking,

while Yang Sen similarly seized his chance and advanced up

river from Iohang on Wan Heien. Chengtu was for a time

partly basigned by Ton Hsi-hou, until Tan kou-hs in's advance

relieved the pressure. Fighting is now proceeding, and it

will be seen that the mêlée is fairly general, except that

there is not so far any news of Liu Ts'un-hou taking advan-

tage of the opportunity to invade the province from the North.

It is usual in these Szechuan wars for the rival factions,

though in actual fact fighting for their own hands, to have

some vagus connection with the other political parties in

China, and in the case of the present mêlée Hsiung K'o Wu,

Tan Mou-hein, and Liu Yu-ohiu (the latter possibly mainly

by force of circumstances) represent the Kuo Min Tang, while

Tang Sen (and possibly Teng Heihou by the fact that he is

fighting the other party) represent and are supported by a

p'ei-fu as part of the latter's general campaign against the

Kuo Mia Tang. Hostilities have also broken out in

Kueichow, probably in sympathy with, and on the general

lines of, those in Szechuan.

15. From the above review of the present political

situation in China it will be seen that the outlook for the

coming year is bad, and that the prospects of the country attaining any stability of government (which at one time last year appeared fairly good) are again remote.
