The Lords Commissioners of His Kajesty's Treasury

have had before Then Mr. Wellesley's letter of the 5th

ultimo (F 756/222/10) further relative to the payment of an

allowance and other expenses to the Chief Justice at Hongkong

for his services on the proposed new Appeal Court at

Shanghai and I am to request you to convey to the Marquess

Curzon of Kedleston the following reply.

Their Lordships observe that the remuneration paid by

the Colony of Hongkong to the Shanghai Judge is 2300

a year and not 2250, as previously stated, together with

subsistence allowance and travelling expenses. While They

are prepared to sanction the payment to the Chief Justice

of Hongkong or his deputy of an allowance of £300 2 year

payable at 2/- to the dollar, for sitting as Appeal Judge

at Shanghai, together with travelling expenses and

subsistence allowance as already authorised, They regret

that They cannot agree that this sum should be paid free

of Income tax.

Under Secretary of State,

Foreign Office.

I am, etc.,

(Signed) R.R. Scott.
