With reference to your letter of the 14th Keroh
last regarding the remuneration to be paid to the Cilef
Justice of Hongkong for sitting as an Appeal Judge zi
Shanghai, I am directed by the Secretary of State for Foreign
Affairs to transmit herewith a copy of a letter on the subject
which has been received from His Majesty's Treasury,
2. It will be seen that the Lords Commissioners of the
Treasury zro prepared to sanction the payment to the Chief
Justice of Hongkong or his deputy of an allowance of three
hundred pounds a year payable at the rate of two shillings to
the doller to ether with actual travelling expenses and a
subsistence allowance of fifteen dollars a day, but that they
cannot agree that this sum shall be paid free of income tax.
3. I am to enquire whether the arrangement 26 now
authorised is acceptable to the Secretary of State for the
Colonies and the government of Hongkong.
