My Lord Duke,

In my telegram of today in reply to Your Grace's personal telegram of yesterday I stated that my attitude in regard to Chinese affairs had been greatly misrepresented and that I would write fully on the subject.

It is clear from Your Grace's telegram that the Foreign Office are under the impression that I am either a supporter of Sun Yat Sen or in favour of the South against the North. Such an impression is entirely wrong.

I have, as anybody who lives on the borders of China must have, certain views and theories as to what the future of China will be and should be and as to the policy which the Western Powers ought to adopt but these are academic views, interesting to myself alone and not I should not think of even very interesting to myself. letting them influence my actions in any way whatever.
