in 6th November Inspector Appleton attached to the Secretariat for Chinese Affaire en information received searched the top floor of the house on en arme warrent. the party et il a.m. were going up the stairs they met e men just coming dow with a parcel under his arm which proved to contain Chinese raw opium. On reaching the floor they found a hand bag in the passage containing raw opium, and some misller packages in various parts of the floor also containing the same kind of opium, the total amount being in all 320 taels, Several persons were found on the floor including a Chinese General of high rank; while the party were there 12 persons entered the flat, including 2 small children who were wearing broad pieces of cloth around their waists under their coats, obviously to be used to carry away the opium which was to be purchased by the persons accompanying them, one man tere up and threw away a piece of paper which when recovered proved to be an order for 110 taels of opium and instructions to debit the cost to his current account. A large number of account books and documents were found the examination of proved a very long and tiring task, the result is given in briet below. The firm consisted of 5 partners the capital being 26,500, the fleer me sccupied nominally as a club, the front room vas used as an office in which the accounts were kept and customers entertained, one aubicle was apparently used for the accommodation of friends and customers visiting the Colony, the end room was used for the sale of opium. Six assistants were employed, some of when brought the opium from the ships and distributed it in Hongkong. The firm
