During the passage of the typhoon raging seas and blinding wind and rain prevailed in the harbour rendering all attempts at rescue practically futile. Host of the ships in the harbour had moved out and anchored in Kowloon Bay over night and in that area it would appear there was considerable congestion and boats bumped against each other and broke loose, The 3.8. The number of deaths in the harbour and adjacent waters osmot be given with any degree

bodies have been recovered and a further fifty persons are
reported as missing.
The damage ashore was considerable. After the
typhoon the streets were littered with debris, sheets of
corrugated iren, signboards, bricks, mortar, trees, and branches and rubbish of every description. On shore the death roll totals approximately 43; these persons were killed by the collapse of houses and metshode, by the
falling of live electric wires, of trees and by landslides.
The principal damage done to the various public
buildings and works and the approximate cost of reinstate-
ment is as follows:-
