can save money if he wishes to do so, and still live on a scale which would probably content him at home. On the other hand he can here, without getting into debt, indulge in more expensive amusementa.

The position of a married master is very different, esepcially if he has a family. In his case strict economy would necessary to enable him to live on his salary.

There is at present no Income Tax in the Colony and there are no rates or taxes in the usual English sense.

Candidates should form their own estimate of the cost of living in the Colony and of the value of any given galry. It may be of help to bachelors in fording that estimate to know that in ay, 1923 the nclusive charge for measing at. the Hong Kong Club was at the rate of $60 a month.

Officers are provided with free passages, on first appointment, for themselves and their families (1... wife and children up to five nersons, inclusive of the officer).

Roughly speaking an officer is eligible for leave on full pay after 4 years' resident service. In the absence of special grounds the leave granted to an officer will not exceed one-sixth of his resident service. On special grounds it may exceed that period by six months.

Officer attached to an educational institution not entitled to vacation leave under the rule stated above -paragraph 1 (a). When in the Colony they enjoy the ordinary vacations of the institution to which they are attached. When taking long leave outside the Colony they may be allowed to draw full pay during the first three months of that leave unless a school vacation has inmediately preceded the grant of leave, in which case full pay may be drawn during two months only. The remainder of the leave in either case is on half salary, and half pay only can be drawn during any school vacation falling within the period of an extension of leave.

The present rule as to superannuation is that, in the case of ill-health, an officer holding a pensicnable appointment may be allowed to retire on a pension after 10 full years' service; other- wire he must have attained the age of 55. For 10 full years' service 15/60ths of the average annual salary of the retiring officer's fixed appointment for the three years preceding retirement may be awarded, to which 1/60th may be added for each additional year's service; but no addition will be made in respect of any service beyond 35 years.
