I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 19th instant with a copy of a despatch of His Excellency the Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia on the exportation of opium frem Macao to that country.
As for your wishes and those of His Excellency the Governor for my Government to prevent the exportation of opium to Australia, I am very pleased te infom you that as far as the case quoted is concerned the firm Alves R. Alves Toledo & Ca. is not known in this Colony, in which dnly one firm, the Concessionaire Lee Sing and 0. has the right of import- ing and exporting opium, as you must know,
It is very easy to understand the mistake they have made in Australia, as the name of the firm seems Portuguese,
It is true that the opium boiled in Macao is known as the best in the Far East, and it is for that that they sell in the oriental countries a hundred times the 386 chests the Concessionaire is allowed to boil per annum.
That counterfeited opium, sold as exported from Macso, is disguised under different names. At Kuang Chau Wan they go as far as to copy the metal case and the trade mark.
Kuang Chau Wan, Singapore and several Japanese and Chinese Agents sell in a week more opium
