My Lord Duke,

With reference to Your Grace's despatch No.56 of the 16th March, 1923, I have the honour to inform you that Mr.

R. F. Johnston, C.B.E., joined the service of this Colony on the 17th November, 1898, and was transferred to Weihaiwei on the 11th May, 1904, on a salary of $1,800 per annum as a Passed Cadet. He was absent from the Colony on half pay leave from 23rd December, 1902, to 20th January, 1903.

Under Clause 17(1) of the Pension minutes he is entitled therefore to a pension of 65/720ths of $1,800 namely $162.50 per annum which, if drawn out of Chim, should be converted into sterling at 3/- to the dollar. Hr. Johnston is also eligible for a percentage increase of pension in accordance with the authorised scale. If the temporary pension granted by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury amounting to £243. 6. 0 per annum is the only sum received by Mr. Johnston from public funds the percentage increase will be 20% if draw in Chine and 25% if draw outside China.
