To my regret, I have made a mistake by forgetting three medical institutes among others, which are working in the manner the Red Cross Society should aim to do. First the "Budi Kemuliaan", a maternity and a Native Nursing School at Batavia, and a similar institute at Semarang. And then there is the "Vereeniging tot bevordering der oogheelkunde in Ned.-Indië" (Society for the promotion of ophthalmology in the Dutch East Indies) at Jokjakarta, whose capital was brought together by Asiatics (Chinamen) only, with the exception of two or three Europeans, and which, with a large subsidy from the Government, is building a hospital for eye-diseases at that place, where in a house nearby at present more than a thousand sufferers are attended to every day by the ophthalmologist Dr. Yap, a chinaman, born in the Dutch East Indies, who studied in Holland, and his staff.
