ARTS.
To a much greater extent than is the case in Medicine or in Engineering, the questions which arise in connection with the Faculty of Arts are questions of staff, coming within the scope of au earlier section of this appeal. It should, however, be observed that the Faculty of Arts, as at present organized, includes all sciences other than the spec- ialized medical and Engineering sciences, and that whenever the time shall be ripe for the creation of a Faculty of Science new problems will arise. Such problems, however, belong to the future: a necessary preliminary step is a very considerable advance in the teaching of science in the secondary schools,
The only problem that is left to be dealt with is that of the teaching of Chinese. Although the subject of Chinese is an obligatory subject in the Matriculation Examination for all Chinese-speaking candidates, and is equally obligatory as a University subject should they enter the Faculty of Arts, and although the subject is taught by distinguished Hanlin graduates, the treatment of the subject cannot be regarded as worthy of the shore taken in the study of Chinese by distinguished British Sinologues. Once more, the question is one of and other needs are recognised as more immediately urgent. Were there a definite demand that the question should be dealt with, the University would be prepared to take it up, but the miniman endowment necessary for the purpose cannot be placed lower than $300,000.
