On the importance of obtaining the right kind of men it will be unnecessary to dwell, In a widely extended educational system there may be room for meu of every type, but a single British University in China must fail of its purpose unless it creates in its graduates no inspiration that they, in their turn, can pass on to wider circles. There is also no small risk of a sense of isolation, and if any kind of touch is to be maintained with University life elsewhere, at least a proportion must be attracted of men who, by their attainments and standing, are qualified for appointment to positions in Great Britain after a period of service in the Far East. And, finally, the risk must be avoided of the teacher being isolated by his narrow. means from the social and, general life of the Colony open to other men drawn from the saine class as bimself.
Detailed figures as to salaries are not a matter for public discussion, but it is estimated that, unless there should be a considerable further rise in salaries in Great Britain, suitable scale salaries on the basis of existing staff would involve a maximum liability of $50,000 per annum, the full incident of which would not be felt for some ten years.
Some scheme of superannuation is recoguis- ed to-day as essential for any University staff, and the Court has already agreed in principle to the institution of a scheme upon a contributory basis, members of the staff contributing 5% of their salaries af the University adding a further 10%. The
