ong The reasons for my leaving the Chart Depot were as follows:

Lieut: Commander Haslewood was a retired Officer who had volunteered for service during the far. About the time of his leaving liong Kong, the Wer being over, the Admiralty were reverting such Officers to the Retired List and they were being arned in advance of the likelihood of their being relieved at an early date by Active Service Officers as opportunity offered. The object of this warning was to give these Officers as much notice as possible of the impending change. Lieut: Commander

aslewood knew that this was the Admiralty policy at the time, though it is doubtful if the warning reached him before he left Hong Kong.

In view of the two preceding paragraphs, the Admiralty deny, and will be surprised if Lieut: Commander Haslewood now permits it to be stated, that he was "driven out" of a lucrative fopointment by the Admiralty. Nor does it seem strictly accurate to ser that "discipline told". He resigned end went Lome under "a cloud". In ooint of fact the Governor and the Commander-in-Chief were saved the necessity of taking any decision either as regards this Officer or his wife, owing to the illness of rs. Heslewood, which made necessary her return to England with her husband to accompany her, he being allowed to vacate his appointment and return home at his own request. le was merely naturally told that the anointment could not be lept open for him, but he could not possibly have expected otherwise. End

On his return home Lieut: Commander Haslewood attacked the Admiralty, asking for compensation and redress and was informed (in addition to matters relating to the settlement of his account) that the Admiralty had made no charge against lia and that he was in fact relieved of his appointment in Hong Long at his own request.
