Case of Lieutenant-Commander Haslewood:
With reference to your letter of June 9th, paragraph 8 of your proposed reply to Mr. Begbie has been carefully considered and, on the whole, we should be glad if you would omit the second sentence, thus leaving it to Mr. Begbie, or Lieutenant-Commander Haslewood, to reopen the case direct with the Admiralty should they elect to do so.
We would also prefer that the words "Commander Haslewood's resignation" in the first sentence of paragraph 8 should be deleted, and the words "terminetion of Lieutenant-Commander Haslewood's Hong Kong appointment"
inserted instead.
In this connection, 1 should explain that, in view of his controversial request to be "Commander" on the Retired List, it is preferable to describe him as Lieutenant-Commander
Our throughout your Memorandum and never as Commander. objection to the word "resignation" in its present context is that it might seem to suggest that Lieutenant-Commander Haslewood was forced to resign from the Service, and it is well that this should be avoided.
