The answers to the questions contained in your

despatch No.26 of the 8th ultimo regarding the re-

gistration of British subjects and protected persons

are as follows:

1.

Fending further instructions the sanarate fee

should be charged. Dae Circular to Consuls No.41

of July 13th, 1922.

2.

From Section 19 Chapter XV11 of the General

Vonsular Instructions and the form of endorsement given in Annex 3 to that chapter, it is presumed that the answer is in the negative.

3. The answer is given in Section 2 (8) of the

China (Amendment) Order in Council 1921, 1.e. that

you should use your discretion as to the evidence of British nationality you s'ould require. It is not usual to demand documentary evidence of marriage

unless you have re-son to doubt the genuineness of

the claim.

As regards the inclusion of more than one wife

on a parsnort, the point is not likely to rise in

China. Chinese British Jubjects are limited to

one lezal wife by either British or whinese law.
