With reference to Your Tordship's despatch No 1037
(T_12846/2284/501) of November 2nd last and your telegram No it
Sof January 14th I have the honour to report that at the end
of Warch lart i approached the Wai Chiao Pu informally on the

subject of the vexed question of the Status of British subjecti
of Chinese descent. The Minister for Foreign Affairs promised
to look into the matter; but the political crisis leading up
to the resent Civil War in North China followed shortly after-
Warde,
and I have since been awaiting the return of normal con-
ditions here before returning to the question with the Wai
Chine Pu.
Besling with Ny Jamieson'a proposals contained in the

correspondence forwarded in your Tordship's deepatch under
reply, British and Chinese Nationality Law are of course, as
far as the protection of British subjects of Chinese origin in
