I have taken pains to deny forthwith. In making these allegations, I do not believe that Mayor Baker was inspired by any particular animos ity against Great Britain, but he is always inclined to sensationalism in order to produce an effect, and if rash statements will help his purpose, he will
not hesitate to make them, In the case of Dr. Andrew C.
Smith, he is known as one of the leaders of the Trish
Republican Party in this city, and is consequent ly inspired with the deepest animosity against Great Britain. Any
opportunity, therefore, that comes to Dr. Smith to display this
animosity, is always very fully availed of.
