At the same time it is perfectly obvious

to me after five years of very alose study of this

Province that an "atmosphere" exiate which is keenly

anti-foreign, and anti-foreign feeling is expressed

in various ways which, however trifling they may

appear to others, for me have a definite significance.

A common catchword in Chengtu is "first

oust the extra provincial, then oust the foreigner"
