under the conditions new existing, it might be well to
defer its purchase for a short time. ve are proposing in
another part of this report that certain definite informa-
tion as regards depth of water, etc. should be obtained,
and until this information is available it will probably
not be necessary to do much dredging. We also consider it
would be advisable that the matter should remain in
abeyance until a decision has been arrived at with regard to
carrying out, or otherwise, the resumendations set forth
in this report. If a contract should be arranged for their
sxecution, the Centraeter would provide a dredger for his
work and arrangements could be made with him for carrying
out any additional dredging required, and it would be time
enough upon the completion of the Contraster's operations
for the Government to consider the question of soquiring
a dredger of ite own. If the works are not proceeded with
in accordance with our recommendations the matter should be
taken in hand, and we should be glad to advise upon the
subject.
70. The question of scaling arrangments has been
raised in a general way, and the information received from
the Colony includes the results of soundings and borings
off Tai Wan Point. So far as we can gather from the
particulars forwarded, there would be no difficulty as regards site in affording the necessary jetty or wharf
