HONG-KONG PORT SCHEME.

BIG DEVELOPMENTS PROPOSED. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)

HONG-KONG, MAY 23.

The Government published to-day Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice's long-awaited re- commendations for the improvement of the port of Hong-kong.

The complete scheme involves the reclamation of forty-eight acres of Hunghom Bay, the erection of six jetties giving eighteen to twenty berths for the largest vessels, and extensive accommoda- tion for junks and barges.

The estimate for the first instalment providing two jetties and the reclamation

of seven acres, but not including the erection of warehouses, railways, cranes, and power stations, is £1,260,000, and the time required to complete the frat instalment is estimated at three and a half years.

Hitherto the port has been developed almost entirely by private enterprise. Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice says that the time has azrived for the adoption of a definite scheme. The deepening of the Suez Canal in the near future will allow ships of 85t. draught to pese through with certainty, consequently he proposes 371t. alongside the wharves at low water.

As against the formation of port trust or the allotment of land to existing what owners for development at their own expense, the report recommends construction by the Government on settled plan of develop- ment for many years ahead and the leasing to private companion, who should be left to manage their business in their own way.
