I have the honour to submit that you will be pleased favourably to consider à recommend this my application to be placed upon the Temporary Half Pay list whilst holding the appointment of Aide de Camp to His Excellency the Governor of Hong Kong,
2.
I have to Inform you that I should not have been in a position to think of taking up this appointment had I not been confident of receiving half pay from Nayal funds owing to the fact that I was obliged to incur a number of bills, as well as an over-draft & my bank, in order to purchase the necessary outfit. As I have no private capital at all and only a small allowance from my father I am at a loss to know how I am to meet my obligations if I am not to be granted the half pay I counted on. It is quite impossible for me to save any portion of the £300 per annum allowed me by the Hong Kong Govt. |
3.
That there could be any doubt of my being on the half pay list never enter d my mind for the following reasons 1- (a) I was told at the Royal Marine Office that I should be plạed upon the half pay list from the date of leaving England. (b) captain Brook shart Rath, bolding an exactly Gimilar appointment to my own is shown in the Navy List as being in receipt of half pay,
(c) I received a letter (copy attached) from the Brigade Major R.. at Chatham in which it is stated that I should be placed upon the half pay 11at.
4.
I understand that the Colonial office applied for permission for me to accept this appointment about a month before I left England but I have only this week boon shown a copy of Royal "arine urdera in which it is stated that I am not to receive half pay. For over three months thorofore I have been under the definite impression that I was receiving half pay and was to continue to receive it whilst holding this appoi ment, and I have boen forwɑrding savy Forms 1075B & 2024 accordingly.
5.
I have the honour to submit further that my time out here will not be wasted from a professional point of view. I have already commenced to study Fortuguese with the object of
I sitting for an Interpreters Examination in this language. also intend to take the examination in subjects 'd' for promo- tion to Major at the first opportunity.
6.
I respectfully request that an early and favourable decision may be given in this matter and that I may be informe of the nature of such decision by cable, if necessary at my_ow" expense, I make this request owing to the fact that most of m obligations in lingland fall due at the end of this year and I shall not otherwise hear the result of my appeal until next January at earliest.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
Neville.
