In order that the actual conditions of the hospital may be known, the following points may be considered: - 1. VENTILATION: This is quite good in all the wards, but some of the older wards are dark owing to the fact that space being limited and the admission of patients imperative, full access of sunlight is impossible. Some of the older wards do not suffer from this defect, and all the newer ones leave nothing to be desired in this respect.
2. CLEANLINESS: The tidiness of the wards leaves much to be desired, but from the point of actual cleanliness of the floors, beds and bedclothes, and absence of vermin, I cannot see that at the present time there is any very serious complaint to be made. At the time of the Commissioners visit it is true that the wards were overcrowded, due partly to the epidemic of influenza then prevailing, but with the opening of a new wing containing 120 beds this has been overcome.
3. EQUIPMENT:

This is an excellent modern operating theatre, smply supplied with up-to-date instruments and sterilising apparatus. Three hundred operations under general anaesthesia were performed last year with very satisfactory results.
There is a special theatre for midwifery cases which adjoins the midwifery wards. Last year there were 800 deliveries with two deaths. These deaths occurred in patients whose condition on admission was extremely grave. In an
antiquated, insanitary hospital, it seems improbable that these
results would have been obtained.
